FAQs

1. What is a URN / Booking Number?

A Unique Reference Number (URN) is a booking number assigned by the publisher when an advert is booked.

To view booking data in Specle, the email address used to log into Specle must be set as the copy-contact for that booking.

Publishers can update this on request, or the Specle Support Team can contact them on your behalf.

2. Confirming a Booking

Selecting Confirm notifies the publisher that you have acknowledged and confirmed the booking details.

3. Rejecting a Booking

Selecting Reject notifies the publisher that you will not be submitting artwork for this booking. A drop-down menu allows you to provide a reason for the rejection.

4. How do I add a booking to my Campaign? (Campaign Tool users only)

After confirming the booking, a Delivery Options button will appear.

From here, you can:

  • Upload directly to the booking, or

  • Add the booking to a Campaign in the Campaign Management Tool.

5. I selected the wrong URN. How do I remove it?

Go to the Job Page of the upload and click Unmatch from Booking. This will remove the URN so you can enter the correct one.

6. Why can’t I see my booking?

This usually means your email address has not been set as the copy contact for the booking. Please ask the publisher to update the copy-contact to the email you use for Specle. Once done, your booking will appear in the Bookings tab.

7. What does “Match to Booking” mean?

This option appears when no URN has been assigned to an upload. Click Match to Booking and search for the required URN.

If the URN does not appear, please confirm with the publisher that you are assigned to the booking.

8. Why can’t I send without a URN?

Some publishers — including News UK, TMG, DMG, Reach PLC, Bauer, Guardian, and New Scientist — now require a URN for all submissions.

This ensures files are correctly matched and managed. Please request the URN from your media buyer or the publisher.

9. Where can I find publisher contact details?

Publisher contact details are available:

  • On the Publication Page under the Contacts tab

  • On the Copy Chasing page

10. How does a URN work?

A URN is a unique booking number (typically 6–10 digits) used to track an advert submission. Some publishers require a URN before artwork can be delivered.

11. I have two sides to upload, but only one URN.

Most two-sided bookings will include URNs with suffixes such as -01 and -02. If only one URN has been provided, please contact the publisher to confirm which side they require, as one URN can only be used for one file.

12. The booking information is incorrect. What should I do?

If a booking contains incorrect details, please escalate the issue to your commercial contacts or media buyer. Publisher-side corrections must be made before the booking will display correctly in Specle.
